Canyon Carballosa (they/them)
Canyon Carballosa is an autistic queer trans nonbinary movement maker. They grew up in a toxic environment that didn’t allow space for queerness, trans ness, or any other ness. Because of that, Canyon found themselves often using dance as an instrument to connect to their physical body and keep them grounded in perspective. They have spent years collecting tools for healing traumas, breaking through personal walls, and rediscovering a genuine love for one’s most authentic self.
They currently work as a professional dancer, national award winning choreographer, competitive judge, and YPAD educated teacher. They received their training in New York City, where they attended the Broadway Dance Center Professional Program with a focus in contemporary and hip hop. Canyon has had an incredibly fulfilling career working with a number of productions and artists including Dua Lipa, Stella Artois, Angel Olsen, Disney Jr star Genevieve Goings, Showtime, and Starz TV. They have been a principal dancer with innovative contemporary companies, CATASTROPHE! and Elle Vie Dance. Most recently their choreography can be seen in viral artist’s JORDY’s latest music video.
Canyon sees dance as the ultimate way to connect mind, body, and spirit. Their work offers a safe space to explore in new ways, ask questions without judgement, and choose to commit to yourself exactly as you are. Creating these safe spaces is at the forefront of Canyon’s work in dance. By working with DEEA, they hope to continue learning and finding new ways to show up for every member of our community.
